2016 Toyota Prius 4 Touring – First Look and Review

Since its launch in 1994, the Toyota Prius has been the standard bearer for gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles. It’s also been <yawn> somewhat boring to drive.

Fast forward to 2016: With the introduction of the fourth generation of the car (a contest was held to determine what the plural form of the model name would be: it’s Prii), Toyota is adding a new dimension: fun.

Perhaps the world has come around but the new Prius no longer looks futuristically odd. Indeed, it looks contemporary and sleek. Rather than stand out for all the wrong reasons, it stands out for its good looks.

New LED headlights change Prius’ face from open innocence to a more squinty assertiveness. the LED taillights and daytime running lights (DRL) define a new signature look. A new front fascia features a grille with active shutters for better aero performance. The car’s stance has been lowered and widened, and the roof peak has moved forward, creating a profile that’s more teardrop than wedge. Overall wind resistance has been reduced, and the car’s appearance is less stodgy and generally more attractive than before. The result makes the new Prius the most aerodynamic vehicle sold in the states.

INSIDE THE 2016 TOYOTA PRIUS

While Prius fans will feel comfortable in the driver’s seat, the Prius features a completely redesigned dashboard with two full-color thin film transistor information displays. One instrument panel is aligned with the center stack and the Prius Two gets a 6.1” color touchscreen, while the Prius Three and Prius Four get 7” touchscreens complete with great sounding Toyota’s Entune Premium Audio systems that includes navi and the App suite. An optional head up display is available on the Three and Four and put the speedometer, navigation, and Hybrid System Indicator information directly in front of the driver.

Bluetooth connectivity including streaming audio is standard, as is Siri Eyes Free and a rear view camera.
