The Volvo S90 – first unveiled in 2015 – continues to stand apart when it comes to design and passenger comfort four years later.  The striking exterior seems as fresh as it was at launch and the interior continues to be a benchmark for tasteful and functional design.

The S90 – the Swedish automaker’s flagship vehicle – comes with two powertrain options: the T6, which we drove, features an inline four-cylinder engine that is both turbocharged and supercharged, while the plug-in hybrid T8 has more power thanks to the combination of the gasoline engine and electric motor, as well as useful electric-only driving range.

The S90 is part of the 90 Series – a designation that includes the XC90 and the V90.  All 90 Series vehicles are built on the automaker’s global platform, SPA or Scalable Product Architecture, introduced with the XC90. They all share numerous features and characteristics both inside and out including a 9” tablet-like touch screen for infotainment and climate control and the Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights, which give the 90 Series vehicles a signature look.

Thor’s Hammer may be handy to have as the S90 competes in a crowded market segment that also includes the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class as well as half a dozen other vehicles including the Acura RLX, Audi A6, Cadillac CTS, Hyundai Genesis, Infiniti Q70, Jaguar XF, and Lexus GS.

The S90 sits lower, has a lower roofline, and is noticeably wider than most of the competition while maintaining a look that clearly acknowledges its ancestral Volvo sedans, the 140 and 240.

Volvo is known for its excellent ergonomic seats and the S90 is no exception.  Indeed, in my first S90 review, I noted that the S90 might be the press car most likely to be returned minus one front seat that was accidentally turned into a desk chair.
