Volkswagen Debuts Golf SportWagen TDI at New York Show

DSCN0158NEW YORK — Volkswagen debuted a concept version of what is destined to become the Golf SportWagen, which replaces the Jetta SportWagen in the automaker’s U.S. lineup.

The move follows Volkswagen’s U.S. introduction of the 2015 Golf.

The Jetta SportWagen was actually a previous-generation Golf variant and was sold as such in other markets.  The take rate for the diesel-powered version of the Jetta SportWagen in the United States was consistently upwards of 80%.

The new Golf SportWagen is lighter than the current model, due to its use of high and ultra-high strength steels.  The vehicle also has an enhanced crash structure than its predecessor.

The new GSW is 1.1” longer and 0.7” wider than the outgoing SportWagen, as well as 0.9” lower.  Additionally, the 2015 model offers 0.4” of additional front and rear headroom.

The 2015 Golf SportWagen will have 170 horsepower, and will have a 1.8-liter turbocharged TSI engine, paired to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.  The TDI Clean Diesel version of the car will have 150 horsepower, and the new EA288 2.0-liter common-rail, turbocharged direct-injection diesel engine.
