For the curious, VC stands for variable compression and the VC-Turbo runs at anywhere between 8:1 to 14:1 based on what the computer deems necessary at the time.

The VC-Turbo engine also has variable displacement, although to a far lesser extent. Displacement can vary from 1,992 cubic centimeters to 1,997, again based on what the governing computer deems necessary. This is not, however, a Cadillac V-8-6-4 – the VC-Turbo uses fairly sophisticated technology to govern when it changes compression ratios or displacement.

Why this all matters comes down to performance and fuel economy: at 8:1, expect maximum power when you need it and, at 14:1, expect maximum fuel economy.


Once underway, one can let Infiniti’s ProPilot Assist driver-assistance technology do some of the work. The system can accelerate and keep pace with traffic and assist with steering and braking when appropriate. We found this worked quite well in stop-and-go traffic and it’s probably safer than most drivers are in such circumstances.

While I’d never accuse the QX50 of being a speed demon, it fared quite nicely in highway driving. Not being one to have a delicate touch on the accelerator, I found that it took off from a standstill with just a touch of turbo lag, and I never had trouble passing slower-moving traffic (to me, admittedly, all traffic is slower-moving traffic).

The QX50 is predictable and goes where it’s pointed. Steering is responsive and it feels sure-footed and stable around tight corners.


The 2019 Infiniti QX50 is a good-looking SUV with an elegant interior. It differentiates itself from its lesser Nissan brethren with a premium look and feel. The combination of luxurious appointments and excellent build quality should place the QX50 on your short list if this is the type of luxury SUV you are seeking.
