The increased power didn’t take a toll on fuel economy; in fact it’s unchanged on the automatic and up slightly on the manual transmission model. After a week enjoying the Miata on the curviest roads we could find in the New York metro area, we still managed to see a fuel economy average of 33 mpg (7.13 l/100 km).

With the top up, the interior is fairly quiet inside, far quieter than the roadster variant of the Miata. To be sure, it is tight – but not cramped – in the passenger compartment but you’ll be so busy enjoying the joy of driving the Miata you may not notice.

Fit and finish is excellent and the addition of options such as heated seats two years back means one can drive with the roof open on cold but sunny winter days.

BOTTOM LINE

The reason we always love this car so much and look forward to its arrival is simple: it’s a blast to drive.

To echo Jonathan Spira’s sentiment in his 2017 review of the Miata RF, Japanese Fahrvergnügen anyone?
