Diesel Prices at 2-Year High

The price of a gallon of gasoline is up in many parts of the country as demand reached its highest levels since 2006 while supply continues to drop. This has led to a surge in fuel prices, something particularly noticeable in the Midwest.

In that region, the price for a gallon of gasoline was $2.546, $0.464 more than it was a year ago at this time. The region with the next highest uptick in gasoline prices was the West Coast, which saw a $0.363 increase over the past year for a price of $3.049. New England’s prices rose $0.308, while the Central Atlantic and Rocky Mountain regions saw a rise of $0.276 and $0.270, respectively. The average increase for the cost of a gallon of gasoline in the United States was $0.328.

Meanwhile, the average price for a gallon of diesel in the United States was up $0.412 from a year ago. The West Coast saw the sharpest increase, with a rise of $0.566 for a price of $0.332. The Midwest experienced a $0.436 increase for a price of $2.861, while the Rocky Mountain region saw a $0.433 for a price of $2.965.

A portion of the price uptick can be attributed to Hurricane Harvey in August.
