The Mazda CX-9 was completely new for the 2016 model year and is on its own, no longer sharing the Ford CD3 platform, and even a casual glance shows its designers bestowed on it a new level of refinement and excitement that makes it gravitate towards the luxury-car segment, competing with the Infiniti QX60 and Acura MDX. Indeed, next to our short-term Machine Gray CX-9, the two looked somewhat boring by comparison.

Mazda’s designers have made it an excellent representative of the automaker’s Kodo design language.

INSIDE THE 2017 MAZDA CX-9 Signature

Open the door, sit down on the glove soft Nappa leather seats, and the quality is readily apparent. Is that leather on the door or dash or vinyl? Hard to tell.

Our CX-9 was the top-of-the-line Signature version which came with all sorts of goodies. If there’s one thing Mazda does well is to offer choices. There are five trim levels available.

The base version is well equipped, however, with cloth seats, LED headlights and taillights, a backup camera, and Mazda’s 7” touchscreen system with a separate cockpit controller for refugees from Bavaria.

Move up on notch to Touring and leather seats, blind-spot detection, power front seats, all appear along with a an additional inch on the touchscreen and rear cross-traffic alerts on the backup camera. Premium adds a 12-speaker Bose sound system, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a sunroof, and satellite radio. Still not done? The Grand Touring has 20” wheels, a head-up display (which we have come to admire since it works with polarized sunglasses), lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, automatic high-beams, and more.

Finally, we reach our Signature CX-9, we  found elegant rosewood accents, brick-colored Nappa leather seats, an LED-illuminated grille frame, and other goodies that were hard to keep track of.
