Volkswagen Reports Decrease in August Sales

DSC_0717Volkswagen announced financial results for August 2014.  The company’s total sales in August dropped 12.8% year-over-year to 35,181 vehicles sold from 40,342 vehicles sold in August 2013.

Sales for most of the company’s major models also decreased year-over-year.  The Beetle saw the largest decline, with total Beetle sales dropping 41% to 2,905 vehicles sold in August compared with 4,921 vehicles sold in the same month last year.  Sales of the company’s Tiguan and Passat models also decreased year-over-year, with Tiguan sales dropping 27% to 2,151 units sold and Passat sales dropping 9.8% to 9,190 units sold.

The company sold 15,361 total Jettas in August, a year-over-year decline of 5.6% from 16,280 vehicles sold in August 2013.  Sales of the Jetta Sportwagen, which is being replaced by the Golf Sportwagen, saw a decrease of 29.5% to 1,955 vehicles sold in August.

Meanwhile, sales of the VW Golf  – the seventh generation recently went on sale at U.S. dealerships – increased significantly by 26.2% year-over-year, up to 3,799 vehicles sold from 3,010 vehicles sold in the same month last year.  Sales of the Golf GTI in particular increased by 46.7%, up to 2,026 vehicles sold from 1,381 vehicles sold last August.
