MUNICH— Although camouflaged prototypes of it were still being spotted in Munich a little over a week ago, BMW has now released information about the newest addition to the 4 Series product line. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe will make its world debut at the 84th Geneva International Motor Show (Salon International de l’Auto) in March and join the BMW 4 Series Coupe and Convertible in the early summer of 2014.

The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe shares its overall body design with BMWs first four-door coupe, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. In terms of length, width and wheelbase, the Gran Coupe is based on the 4 Series Coupe and Convertible albeit with a slightly longer roofline. It will be offered with three product lines, namely the Sport Line, Luxury Line and Modern Line plus the optional M-Sport package.

Three petrol and two diesel engines will be available to European customers as the model launches.

The BMW 418d Gran Coupe will become the entry-level model in the line and it will share its powerplant with the BMW 420d Gran Coupe. Both models are powered by the same four-cylinder 2.0-liter diesel engine with common rail direct injection technology, turbochargers with variable turbine technology and an all-aluminum crankcase.

The BMW 418d Gran Coupe generates 143 horsepower with a peak torque of 263 pound-feet at 4,000 rpm.  It accelerates from zero to 62 mph (zero to 100 km/h) within 9.2 seconds and has a top speed of 132 mph (213 km/h) while achieving 52 mpg (4.5 l/100 km/h).

The 420d produces 184 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque between 1,750 and 2,750 rpm and sprints from zero to 62 mph (zero to 100 km/h) within 7.7 seconds. It has a top speed of 146 mph (236 km/h) and has a combined fuel economy of 50 mpg (4.7 l/100 km) while emitting 128g of CO2 emissions.

Both diesel models may be ordered with the optional eight-speed automatic transmission that further reduces fuel consumption. Two additional diesel-powered variants, the BMW 430d Gran Coupe and the BMW 435d Gran Coupe are likely to follow later this year.

The petrol powered variants of the 4 Series Gran Coupe range from the BMW 420i to the BMW 428i (both are powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine) up to the high-end BMW 435i Gran Coupe with a six-cylinder in-line 3.0-liter petrol engine delivering 306 horsepower.

Available safety features on the 4er GC include BMW ConnectedDrive, head up display, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, and Active Blind Spot Detection.

U.S. customers will be offered a choice of the BMW 428i and the BMW 435i Gran Coupe, both with the eight-speed automatic transmission. At the start of production, the BMW 428i may be ordered with BMW xDrive while this will become an option for the BMW 435i later this year.

According to BMW, there are currently no plans to offer a diesel-powered version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe in the U.S. at the present time.
