Volkswagen announced that it has built and will deliver the 500,000th seventh-generation Golf to a customer within the next few days. The specific model wasn’t announced but, statistically, it’s likely to be a four-cylinder diesel.

Volkswagen has yet to launch the new Golf in key markets such as the United States and China.  It will debut in the U.S. in 2014.

The Volkswagen Golf is “the most important model” in the Wolfsburg-based automaker’s lineup, noted CEO Martin Winterkorn, adding that it is “a powerful engine for the Volkswagen brand.”

VW plans to launch several new Golf variants in the coming year, including  the e-Golf and the Golf Plug-in Hybrid..

The Golf made its debut in May 1974 as a replacement for the legendary Volkswagen Beetle (Käfer in German), which had been in production since 1938.  The seventh-generation Golf was announced in September 2012 and made its debut one month later at the Paris Auto Show.  Since its introduction, it has consistently been one of the top-selling cars in Europe.
