The ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) awarded its prestigious Gelber Engel prize to BMW for the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition BluePerformance  in the  Car of the Future category.

The Gelber Engel award is given in five different categories, namely Car, Innovation and Future, Quality, and Personality.   This year’s award marks the first time that a diesel powered automobile has won in this category.  In second and third places were the Toyota Prius 1.8 Plug-In Hybrid and the Yaris Hybrid.

The EfficientDynamics package includes energy saving tires with reduced roll resistance, brake energy regeneration, an adapted final drive ratio and an optimized gear shift indicator. Under the hood, the BMW 520d shares its engine with the BMW 320d EDE . Both EfficiendDynamics models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder diesel engine with a power output of 184 hp (135 kW). The engine features a centrifugal pendulum absorber which is integrated in the dual-mass flywheel of the engine and makes it possible to drive the car without any bucking around 1,000 rpm.

The combined fuel economy of the BMW 520d EDE BluePerformance is only 4.5 l/100 km (52 mpg) with CO2 emissions of 119g per km. Emissions are further reduced by BMWs Blue erformance technology, which combines a diesel particulate filter and oxidation catalyst with a NOx absorber catalyst. The system reduces nitrogen oxide emissions and achieves compliance with the EU6 standards.
