BMW M PERFORMANCE AUTOMOBILES
The line of BMW M Performance Automobiles was announced by BMW in January 2012.  At the time of the announcement, Dr. Friedrich Nitschke, president of BMW M GmbH, explained that BMW is targeting its efforts at customers who are looking for performance-oriented cars without sacrificng everyday usability.

With the introduction of the first four diesel-powered M Performance cars, BMW sets a new benchmark for outstanding performance and efficiency. The BMW M550d xDrive Sedan and Touring (Sports Wagon), the BMW X5 M50d and X6 M50d feature BMWs latest diesel technology. The 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line diesel engine, which comes standard in the first four diesel-powered M Performance cars, provides a power output of 381 hp (280 kW). TwinPower Turbo technology represents BMW’s next generation of multi-stage turbocharging. A set of three turbochargers (one larger and two smaller ones) create a peak torque of 546 pound-feet (740 Nm) and make the engine the most powerful diesel ever built by BMW.

The BMW M550d xDrive is one of the most efficient and at the same time one of the most powerful cars in the BMW lineup. The car is rated with 6.3 l/100 km (37.3 mpg) in the EU test cycle while it can go from  0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) within 4.7 seconds.

According to Thomas Plucinsky, a spokesman for BMW of North America, there are no plans to bring the diesel-powered M Performance cars to the U.S. at this time.

NEW 1 AND 3 SERIES MODELS
The 3 Series gets three new models  (two diesel, one petrol), namely the 316d (116 hp, 85 kW), 318d (143 hp, 105 kW) and the 320i (184 hp / 135 kW). Despite the  four-cylinder engine is equipped with BMW TwinPower Technology and has a displacement of 2-liter.

BMW is also introducing several new 1 Series models, including the most efficient passenger car ever offered by BMW, the BMW 116d EfficientDynamics Edition. The 116d EDE  emits only 99g CO2 per kilometer and with a fuel economy rating of 3.8 l/100 km (62 mpg) in the EU test cycle. The 116d EDE is powered by a 2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine with 116 hp (85 kW).

In addition to the 116d EDE, BMW is also introducing the most powerful diesel and petrol variants of the 1 series.   The 125d and the 125i, each with a power output of 218 hp (160 kW), complete the 1 Series model range.
