In the run-up to the 82nd Geneva International Motor Show, BMW announced two new models in the BMW 6 Series line-up. The BMW 640d xDrive Coupe and Convertible will be available in the spring and join the current model variants of the 6 Series, namely the 640i, 650i, and 640d. BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system is making its debut in the BMW 6 Series as well and will also be available for the petrol-powered 650i Coupe and Convertible.

The 640d xDrive accelerates from 0 – 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 5.2 seconds. The 313 hp (230 kW) power plant is engineered with BMW´s latest TwinPower Turbo technology. Multi-stage turbocharging is combined with common-rail direct fuel injection whose piezo injectors work with a maximum pressure of 2,000 bar. Precisely measured quantities of the diesel fuel are injected into the combustion chamber of the engine which guaranties clean and efficient combustion.

Driving Experience Control , which is standard, offers the driver four different driving modes (Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Eco Pro). The Eco Pro mode adjusts the characteristics of the engine and the transmission to ensure extremely fuel efficient driving. Other EfficientDynamics technologies, including Brake Energy Regeneration and Auto Start-Stop, are standard. BMW reports an average fuel usage of 5.7 – 5.8 liter per 100 kilometer (ca. 47 mpg) in the EU test cycle making it the most efficient luxury coupé/convertible in its class.

The ZF eight-speed sports automatic delivers 465 pound-feet (630 Nm) of torque to the intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive system. The power is quickly distributed to where it is needed, based on the current driving situation, which the xDrive system constantly monitors. Under normal conditions, 60% of the engine’s power is sent to the rear axle and 40% is directed to the front axle.

The BMW 640d xDrive is manufactured at the BMW Werk in Dingolfing (Bavaria). Currently there are no plans to bring the 640d xDrive Coupe and Convertible – or any 6 Series diesel for that matter – to the U.S.
