After another 135 km (84 miles), we crossed the border and entered the Free State of Bavaria near Bad Brückenau and continued to Schweinfurt, which we passed to the west after the next 50 km (31 miles). At the Rasthof Gramschatzer Wald, which we already knew from our drive to Hamburg, we had a small dinner and took a break for about an hour. At quarter past eight the board computer reported a range of 100 km (62 miles) and the low fuel warning appeared in the central information display.

Continuing on our way, our average speed increased to 102.8 km/h (63 mph) and we were only using 4.2 l/100 km (56 mpg). Up until that point, we had driven 1.380 km (857 miles) and could go another 100 km (62 miles) without refueling.

This means our actual range without refueling had been 1,480 km (919 miles) under with traffic and detours.

With the remaining fuel we would have been able to drive the 100 km (62 mile) distance from Schweinfurt to Nürnberg via the A3. Nevertheless I decided to fill up the tank at the Rasthof and to drive the way from Schweinfurt to Munich without any further stop.

We continued on the A7 for a few kilometres and switched onto the A3 before we passed Würzburg to the west. The A3 was part of the original Autobahn plans dating back to the 1920s.   On the A3, our speed was limited to 100 km/h (62 mph).

At the Autobahnkreuz (interchange) Nürnberg Ost we switched from the A3 to the A9.  The A9 is one of the oldest highways in Germany and connects Munich to Berlin, with a total length of 524 km (326 miles).

Ttraffic on the A9 was already very light and there were only a few trucks on the road (only specially authorized trucks, such who transport fruits and vegetables, are allowed to drive on Sundays). So it was again time to push the BMW 320d to its maximum speed of 228 km/h (142 mph). Thanks to the light traffic, we were able to cruise at speeds ranging from 140 km/h to 180 km/h (87 mph – 112 mph) until just outside of Munich.

As a result of our high speed driving after Nürnberg, we entered Munich one and a half our later. As a result, both our average speed and the fuel economy of our BMW 320d changed a bit. Despite the higher speed, we only saw an increase of the fuel consumption to 4.8 l/100 km (49 mpg). Our average speed showed an increase to 109.km/h (68 mph).

After entering Munich, we followed the B2R and the 7 hour 55 minute drive , which covered 825 km (513 miles) was over.  The BMW 320d clearly had the range to go from Hamburg and back.  Had we used public transportation while in Hamburg and not run into the detour in Hannover, the car could easily have made the trip there and back on one tank of diesel fuel.

After our drive, our excitement about the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition has only increased.  What other car can offer such exemplary fuel economy alongside the Freude am Fahren (Joy of Driving) that BMW is famous for?
