			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>2011 was a good year for diesel fans.  Sales of diesel-powered automobiles in the U.S. <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/DSC_0212-ED.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3525" title="DSC_0212-ED" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/DSC_0212-ED-300x181.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="181" /></a>were up 39% in the first half of the year, and it looks like that figure will increase when all of 2011 is tallied.</p>
<p>Two entirely new diesels were introduced in 2011, namely the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/2012-mercedes-benz-s350-bluetec-review-and-first-test-drive/">Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTec</a> and the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/12/2012-volkswagen-passat-tdi-sel-review-and-report/">Volkswagen Passat TDI</a> .  Both cars are four-door sedans with excellent fuel economy and plenty of passenger room.</p>
<p>In addition, Mercedes-Benz introduced a completely redesigned <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/07/2012-mercedes-benz-ml350-bluetec-first-look-and-review/">ML350 BlueTec</a> over the summer.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, readers of The Diesel Driver chose the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/06/bmw-335d-18-month-report-and-review-2/">BMW 335d</a> as the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/04/bmw-335d-2011-diesel-car-of-the-year/">2011 Diesel Car of the Year</a> .  The 3er received 29.6% of the vote, and 3,669 readers from 43 countries took part in the balloting.  In second place was the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2010/03/volkswagen-golf-tdi-review/">Volkswagen Golf TDI</a> with 16.1 p<a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/DSC_0527.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-692" title="DSC_0527" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/DSC_0527-300x199.jpg" alt="BMW 335d BMW Welt" width="300" height="199" /></a>ercent of the vote. The <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/08/2011-volkswagen-jetta-sportwagen-tdi-review/">Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen</a>, with 16 percent of the vote, came in third.</p>
<p>In August, TDD editors Jonathan Spira and Christian Stampfer <a href="http://www.frequentbusinesstraveler.com/2011/09/klm-world-business-class-new-york-jfk-to-amsterdam-flight-644-review/">traveled to the Mercedes-Benz factory</a> in Sindelfingen <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/mercedes-benz-european-delivery-%e2%80%93-the-mercedes-benz-e350-bluetec-diesel-sedan/">to take delivery</a> of The Diesel Driver’s <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/08/introducing-the-diesel-drivers-new-long-term-auto-the-2011-mercedes-benz-e350-bluetec/">new E350 BlueTec sedan</a> .  Since then, the E-Klasse has visited four countries (Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and the U.S.) and 10 states plus the District of Columbia in the U.S.  Its maiden drive was <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/the-road-to-maastricht-driving-the-mercedes-benz-e350-bluetec-diesel-sedan/">from Sindelfingen to Maastricht,</a> and its first trip in the U.S. was <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/11/mercedes-benz-e350-bluetec-test-drive-and-report-the-road-to-kennebunkport/">from New York to Kennebunkport</a>.</p>
<p>In a poll we conducted earlier this year, 749 readers told us <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/05/why-you-bought-a-diesel/">why they purchased a diesel</a>. <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/DSC_0864.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3535" title="DSC_0864" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/DSC_0864-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a>The most often cited reason was fuel economy followed by power and torque.  Reliability was third, followed by reduced emissions and a higher residual value.</p>
<p>From the Tokyo Motor Show, Jonathan Spira reported that <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/12/bmw-mercedes-to-offer-diesels-in-japan/">BMW and Mercedes-Benz are starting to offer diesels in Japan</a>, traditionally the land of the gasoline-electric hybrid.  Christian Stampfer reported from Frankfurt on the newest diesels and alternative-fuel vehicles being introduced <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/bmw-unveils-i3-i8-640d-525d-118d-and-3-efficientdynamic-edition-models-at-frankfurt-show/">by BMW</a> and <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/mercedes-benz-unveils-slk-250-cdi-diesel-roadster-b-class-b-class-e-cell-f125/">by Mercedes-Benz </a>and Jonathan Spira discovered that Jaguar Land Rover <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/jaguar-land-rover-to-offer-diesel-engines-in-the-u-s/">will offer a diesel in the U.S. </a>although exactly which vehicle and when remain uncertain.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/DSC_0849.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2430" title="DSC_0849" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/DSC_0849-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a>Finally, balloting for the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/11/vote-for-the-2012-diesel-car-of-the-year/">2012 Diesel Car of the Year</a> started last month and you can still <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/11/vote-for-the-2012-diesel-car-of-the-year/">place your vote</a> or tell your friends to vote for their favorite diesel.  This year&#8217;s nominees include seven passenger cars; the <a href="../2010/02/audi-a3-2-0-tdi/">Audi A3 TDI</a>, the <a href="../2011/11/2011-mercedes-benz-e350-bluetec-diesel-three-month-review-and-report/">Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTec</a>, the <a href="../2011/09/2012-mercedes-benz-s350-bluetec-review-and-first-test-drive/">Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTec</a>, the <a href="../2010/03/volkswagen-golf-tdi-review/">Volkswagen Golf TDI</a>, the <a href="../2011/11/2011-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-nine-month-review-and-report/">Volkswagen Jetta Sedan TDI</a>, the <a href="../2011/08/2011-volkswagen-jetta-sportwagen-tdi-review/">Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI</a>, and the <a href="../2011/12/2012-volkswagen-passat-tdi-sel-review-and-report/">Volkswagen Passat TDI</a>, as well as six SUVs, the <a href="../2011/09/2011-audi-q7-tdi-quattro-review-and-test-drive/">Audi Q7 TDI</a>, the <a href="../2011/09/2011-bmw-x5-xdrive35d-review-and-first-drive/">BMW X5 xDrive35d</a>, the <a href="../2011/07/2012-mercedes-benz-ml350-bluetec-first-look-and-review/">Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTec</a>, the <a href="../2011/12/2011-mercedes-benz-r350-bluetec-4matic-review-and-test-drive/">Mercedes-Benz R350 BlueTec</a>, the Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTec, and the <a href="../2011/03/2011-volkswagen-touareg-tdi-review-and-road-test/">Volkswagen Touareg TDI</a>.</p>

<p>Two of these models, namely the Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTec and the Volkswagen Passat TDI, are new for 2012.  The winner of the 2011 Diesel Car of the Year Award, the BMW 335d, is no longer in production, so the field is wide open, and it’s up to readers of The Diesel Driver to make the decision.  Last year, over 3600 readers took part in the vote.</p>
<p>Voting starts at noon on November 18 and ends at midnight on March 1, 2012.  The 2012 Diesel Car of the Year, as well as the two runners up, will be announced at the New York International Auto Show in April 2012.</p>
<p>Each year, The Diesel Driver&#8217;s readers will select the Diesel Car of the Year, recognizing three vehicles offered in the U.S. as the people&#8217;s choice.  As jurors, you can vote for any one of the 13 nominees.  Criteria range from fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions to performance, handling, styling, comfort, and the overall package.</p>
<p>The Diesel Driver is the world&#8217;s leading publication geared towards automotive enthusiasts who are interested in diesel-powered passenger cars. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last November, I drove the Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTec sedan from New York to Boston and back and promptly fell in love.  <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/DSC_0006.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3228" title="DSC_0006" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/DSC_0006-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a>The trip of 331 km (206 miles) took three hours and my fuel consumption was 6.7 l/100 km (35 mpg).  The return trip of 335 km (208 miles) took a little longer but my fuel consumption was only 6.3 l/100 km (37 mpg). These figures were on par with the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2010/09/bmw-335d-fall-foliage-drive/">fuel economy we saw with our BMW 335d</a> long-term test car, yet the Benz was bigger.</p>
<p>This year Mercedes is celebrating its 125th anniversary and is credited not only with inventing the diesel-powered passenger car in the 1930s but with having invented the automobile as we more or less know it in 1886.  In the U.S. in recent years, diesels have remained solely in the domain of the Germans, while others automakers experiment with hybrids and electric vehicles.</p>
<p>Mercedes’ diesel offspring have done it proud.  <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/DSC_0682.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-3230" title="DSC_0682" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/DSC_0682-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a>It’s not uncommon to see a W123 240D or 300D still on the road, even though the last one was produced over 25 years ago.  The resale value of diesels remains high and that is reflected in the very high residual value of the car for leasing customers.</p>
<p>Mercedes-Benz is currently tied with Volkswagen for offering the most diesel models in the U.S. (each has five). The E350 BlueTec model was added to the list of available E-Klasse models in the U.S. last year, rounding out the automaker’s U.S. diesel lineup with a four-door sedan.  A second four-door sedan, the larger <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/2012-mercedes-benz-s350-bluetec-review-and-first-test-drive/">S350 BlueTec</a> , is first going on sale now at dealerships and was recently in our short-term test fleet.</p>
<p>The 2011 E350 BlueTec sedan was completely new for 2010 and it is a standard E350 sedan in every regard save one: the engine.<a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/DSC_0075.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2783" title="DSC_0075" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/DSC_0075-300x199.jpg" alt="E350 BTEC engine" width="300" height="199" /></a>  Compared to the petrol version, the E350 BlueTec comes with a smaller V-6 3.0-liter 72° engine, which powered an earlier E-Class in the U.S., the 2006 E320 diesel. Today that engine is fitted with Mercedes’ AdBlue urea-injection system that scrubs the exhaust, eliminating almost all of its NOx emissions and making the car legal in all 50 states.</p>
<p>The diesel engine does, however, make a world of difference.  While the diesel only produces 210 hp, it does produce 400 pound-feet of torque between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm.  The E350 gasser only manages 258 pound-feet between 2,400 and 5,000 (the diesel tops out at 4500 rpm incidentally, but that’s fairly typical for an oil burner), while the E550’s massive V-8 only manages to produce 391 pound-feet of torque (although this figure will be increased in the 2012 model).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Our fascination with the BMW 335d started almost two years ago, when Jonathan Spira <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2009/12/24-hours-bmw-welt/">took delivery of our 2010 BMW 335d</a> at the BMW Welt. <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_5962.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3159" title="IMG_5962" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_5962-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a> The successor to the E90 BMW 3 Series has <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/10/bmw-introduces-next-generation-2012-3-series-320d-328i-335i-more-diesels-activehybrid-3/">just been unveiled</a> and production of the current (E90) 3 Series has ended.  The 335d introduced Americans to the concept of a diesel-powered sports sedan and readers of The Diesel Driver named it the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/04/bmw-335d-2011-diesel-car-of-the-year/">2011 Diesel Car of the Year</a>.</p>
<p>Since its launch in December 2008, BMW has sold 8,217 335d sedans in the U.S.  In the same time period, BMW sold 14,532 335i sedans, which means that one out of every three buyers (36% to be exact) chose the diesel variant.</p>
<p>To celebrate the 335d’s successful run, we wanted to drive it in its native habitat, Germany.  Since it wasn’t practical to ship our 335d back to Europe for one last trip, we drove a 2011 335d sedan made for the German market.</p>
<p>The trip would take the 335d from Munich to Frankfurt to Stuttgart and back to Munich.  (See the Virtual Drives <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/10/2011-bmw335d-review-final-drive-road-stuttgart-munich/2/">on page 2</a> for a first-hand look at where we drove the 335d.)<a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_5957.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-3164" title="IMG_5957" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_5957-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>Stuttgart is home to 5.3 million inhabitants and a wide range of automotive suppliers and industrial companies, such as Bosch, have based their headquarters in the capital of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.</p>
<p>When an auto enthusiast thinks of the city of Stuttgart, two automobile manufacturers come to mind, namely  Mercedes-Benz, the inventor of the automobile, with its production facilities based in Sindelfingen, 20 km (12.4 miles) to the south-west of Stuttgart, and Porsche, located in the Zuffenhausen section of Stuttgart. Both automakers recently built new museums (which are really more temples to the automobile than just museums) in Stuttgart. Mercedes-Benz opened its museum in 2006 while Porsche opened theirs to the public in January</p>
<p>After Jonathan and I attended the 64th Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), where we saw numerous announcements from <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/bmw-unveils-i3-i8-640d-525d-118d-and-3-efficientdynamic-edition-models-at-frankfurt-show/">BMW</a>, <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/10/jaguar%e2%80%99s-new-hybrid-sports-car-the-c-x16-production-concept/">Jaguar</a>, <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/jaguar-land-rover-to-offer-diesel-engines-in-the-u-s/">Land Rover</a>, <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/mercedes-benz-unveils-slk-250-cdi-diesel-roadster-b-class-b-class-e-cell-f125/">Mercedes-Benz</a>,  and <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/10/2012-porsche-panamera-diesel-%e2%80%93-first-look/">Porsche</a>, among others,  we planned a visit to Stuttgart to visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum and take a factory tour at the Mercedes plant in Sindelfingen.</p>
<p>We started the next-to-final leg of the BMW 335d’s voyage from our hotel, the Westin Grand Frankfurt, at noon.<a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/DSC_0486.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3166" title="DSC_0486" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/DSC_0486-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a> Since the navigation system reported a traffic jam on the city Autobahn A648, we decided to cross the river Main via the ”Alte Brücke” (old bridge) and headed directly towards the Autobahn A5  in the direction of Basel (Switzerland) and Karlsruhe. We entered the A5 at the interchange Frankfurt-Niederrad, drove past the Frankfurt International Airport and continued for the next 75 km (46 miles).</p>
<p>The first section of the A5, built between Frankfurt and Darmstadt, was used for propaganda purposes by the National Socialist regime in the 1930s and was incorrectly called “Germany’s First Autobahn,” even though the Cologne-Bonn Autobahn had been opened a year earlier.</p>
<p>We exited the A5 at the interchange near Weinheim, changed onto the A659 for a few kilometers and continued the drive via the A6 towards Speyer. After we passed the Hockenheimring, a famous German Formula 1 Grand Prix course, we left the A6 at the interchange Schwetzingen / Hockenheim and reached Speyer a few minutes later.<a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/DSC_0585.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-3168" title="DSC_0585" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/DSC_0585-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a></p>
<p>The city of Speyer (latin, “Spira”) was directly on our way to Stuttgart and would be our first stop.  Speyer has one of the oldest and biggest cathedrals in Germany, a technology museum [the Technik Museum, which has a large collection of historic airplanes, trains and cars including a Lufthansa 747 that is 20 m (65 feet) in the air and visitors can not only climb up a set of stairs to visit the interior of the plane but can also step out onto the wing], and a Jewish museum, dedicated to the former Jewish community.</p>
<p>Fuel economy for the first leg was somewhat disappointing.  After 115 km (71 miles) and an average speed of 102.3 km/h (63.5 mph), we used 10.0 l/100 km (23.5 mpg).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The inevitable epilogue of every European Delivery trip is referred to as “drop-off,”<a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/DSC_0256.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3101" title="DSC_0256" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/DSC_0256-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a> the point at which the owner hands over his car to the shipper for ocean transport to the United States.</p>
<p>We dropped off the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/08/introducing-the-diesel-drivers-new-long-term-auto-the-2011-mercedes-benz-e350-bluetec/">2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTec</a> at the offices of BLG Logistics in Bremerhaven on August 11, 2011 after driving from Arnhem to Bremen and then to Bremerhaven.</p>
<p>BLG is Mercedes-Benz’ shipping agent and takes care of all aspects of shipping the car to the United States, including booking passage and customs brokerage.  In the U.S., customs brokerage is handled by E.H. Harms USA, a subsidiary of BLG. BLG, which was founded in 1877 as the Bremer Lagerhaus-Gesellschaft (Bremen Warehouse Company), is an international logistics organization that, among other things, is responsible for exporting automobiles from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz among others from Europe to the U.S.</p>
<p>BLG’s AutoTerminal Bremerhaven is the largest auto- and RoRo (roll-on roll-off) terminal in Europe. <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/DSC_0341.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-3104" title="DSC_0341" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/DSC_0341-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a>In 2010 it handled 1.6 million automobiles, counting both import and export.  The AutoTerminal is divided into two areas, Section Nordhafen and Section Kaiserhafen.  Almost all of BLG’s passenger car operations, ranging from storage to its technical center, are in the Section Nordhafen.</p>
<p>BLG’s clients include over 25 major automakers in Europe, ranging from Audi to Jaguar to Porsche to Volvo. The range of services offered (not every automaker uses all of the services) ranges from pre-delivery inspection (PDI) to repairs to accessory installation.  To understand how large the Section Nordhafen is, BLG can store a total of 130,000 automobiles (40,000 in covered storage) at any one time.  Not only new cars are transported.  During my visit to the AutoTerminal, I saw a variety of used cars and trucks making their way to and from different continents as well as a 1950s fire truck, destination unknown to me.</p>
<p>The next day, BLG had already booked the E350 on the Independence II, <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Independence-II.png"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3106" title="Independence II" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Independence-II-300x107.png" alt="" width="300" height="107" /></a>which was scheduled to depart Bremerhaven on August 21 and arrive in Baltimore, where Mercedes-Benz USA has its Vehicle Preparation Center (VPC), on September 1, a mere 11 days later.</p>
<p>The Independence II is a Ro-Ro (roll-on roll-off) ship.  It is owned by Arc (American Roll-on Roll-off Carrier), which owns a total of nine ships.  Thanks to a charter agreement with Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL), a related company, Arc transports automobiles as well as high and heavy (i.e. oversized) equipment and its fleet regularly calls on ports in New York, Baltimore, Charleston, and Brunswick. (Our <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/06/bmw-335d-18-month-report-and-review-2/">BMW 335d</a> traveled on<a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2010/01/shipping-the-335d/"> WWL’s MV Manon</a> in late 2009 and WWL transports over 1.2 million vehicles by sea each year.)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The BMW X5, which first appeared in 1999 as a 2000 model, was completely redesigned for the 2007 model year. <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/DSC_0231.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3000" title="DSC_0231" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/DSC_0231-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a> In 2009, BMW of North America introduced the diesel-powered X5 xDrive35d alongside the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/06/bmw-335d-18-month-report-and-review-2/">BMW 335d</a>.   In many respects, the X5 diesel competes against the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/07/2012-mercedes-benz-ml350-bluetec-first-look-and-review/">Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTec</a> ,the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/2011-audi-q7-tdi-quattro-review-and-test-drive/">Audi Q7 TDI, and the </a><a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/03/2011-volkswagen-touareg-tdi-review-and-road-test/">Volkswagen Touareg TDI</a> although each has unique qualities.  The four are the only diesel-powered SUVs available in the U.S. at the present time.</p>
<p>We last looked at the BMW X5 diesel <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2010/01/bmw-x5-xdrive35d/">at the beginning of 2010</a> and the car we liked then has gotten even better.  <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/07/diesel-economics-sales-up-39-for-first-half-of-2011/">In the first two quarters of 2011</a>, 24.5% of BMW X5 drivers chose the diesel mode as opposed to the comparable petrol variant, down from 29% in the first half of 2010.</p>
<p>For 2011, the X5 got a new front bumper and air intakes, a new rear apron as well as numerous minor cosmetic changes. BMW claims that its engineers created a total of 4000 new parts for the 2011 model but this includes two new engines and drivetrains for the gasoline-powered versions.<a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/DSC_0252.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-3002" title="DSC_0252" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/DSC_0252-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a></p>
<p>The X5 xDrive35d remains the fastest and most fuel efficient vehicle in its category (its 0-60 time is 6.9 seconds with fuel economy of 19 mpg (12.8 l/100 km) city/26 mpg (9.0 l/100 km) highway/22 mpg (10.7 l/100 km) combined versus, for example, the new 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTec, which goes from 0 to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds with fuel economy figures of 20  mpg (11.8  l/100 km) city/25 mpg (9.4 l/100 km) highway/22 mpg (10.7 l/100 km) combined.</p>
<p>Most of the significant changes relate to infotainment technology.  As of March production, the X5 comes with BMW Apps, a low-cost infotainment option ($250) that brings compatible iPhone apps and certain functionality into the BMW in an integrated fashion.  Currently, supported apps include Facebook, Twitter, and Internet radio powered by <a href="http://www.executiveroadwarrior.com/2011/03/tunein-radio-review/">TuneIn Radio</a>, as well as the ability to display the iPhone’s calendar and last-mile navigation allowing the driver to remove the iPhone from the car and get directions from his parking spot to the actual destination. <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/DSC_0242.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3012" title="DSC_0242" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/DSC_0242-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a></p>
<p>To use the apps, simply download the BMW Connected App from the iTunes store (it’s free).  BMW Apps is fully integrated with the vehicle including the iDrive display and controller and the iPhone is connected to the car using the standard iPhone USB cable or a snap-in adapter in the center armrest that provides charging.</p>
<p>Once connected, the phone is operated using the iDrive controller and buttons on the multi-function steering wheel.</p>
<p>BMW recently added support for Pandora and announced plans for a Mog app.  The Pandora app allows the driver (or passenger) to access existing stations, create new stations, rate tracks with a thumbs up or thumbs down, and bookmark songs.  The Mog app will bring that company’s on-demand streaming music service, which includes access to virtually any artist, album, or song, and Mog&#8217;s unique &#8220;artist only&#8221; radio, plus the ability to store music on the iPhone and tap into Mog radio and Mog’s curated content (e.g. new releases, editor’s choice, and top charts).<br />

Not only do diesels <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/DSC_0578-ED2.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2826" title="DSC_0578-ED2" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/DSC_0578-ED2-300x144.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="144" /></a>have better fuel economy but they are typically cleaner than the gasoline-powered equivalents and one doesn’t have those pesky (and expensive) batteries to worry about a few years down the road.</p>
<p>Most automakers build diesels although you wouldn’t know it by walking into a U.S. showroom.  A total of 14 models from four automakers, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen, will be available for the 2012 model year.  This includes the brand new <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/2012-mercedes-benz-s350-bluetec-review-and-first-test-drive/">Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTec</a> and the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/12/2012-volkswagen-passat-tdi-sel-review-and-report/">Volkswagen Passat TDI</a> as well as recent entries such as the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/08/introducing-the-diesel-drivers-new-long-term-auto-the-2011-mercedes-benz-e350-bluetec/">Mer</a><a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/08/introducing-the-diesel-drivers-new-long-term-auto-the-2011-mercedes-benz-e350-bluetec/">cedes-Benz E350 BlueTec</a>.</p>
<p>With diesel sales on the uptick, <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/DSC_0849.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2430" title="DSC_0849" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/DSC_0849-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="270" height="179" /></a>why are there still so few on the market?  The answer is that building a diesel engine that meets stringent U.S. emissions standards is expensive and most car makers simply don’t bother because they aren’t convinced that diesels will sell in the U.S.</p>
<p>With diesel sales up 39%, the editors of The Diesel Driver are pleased to present the diesel passenger car lineup for 2012.</p>
<p><strong>AUDI</strong><strong></strong></p>
<p>A brand new <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2010/02/audi-a3-2-0-tdi/">Audi A3</a> <img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2832" title="DSC_0081" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/DSC_0081-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="159" />is just over a year away so Audi is not making any major changes in the current A3 TDI.   Th<strong></strong>e <strong></strong>2<strong></strong>011 Audi A3 TDI gets 30 mpg (7.8 l/10<strong></strong>0 km) in the city and 42 mpg<strong></strong> (5.6 l/100 km) on the highway.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/09/2011-audi-q7-tdi-quattro-review-and-test-drive/">Audi  Q7</a>, which gets 17 mpg (13.83 l/100 km) in the city and 25 mpg (9.4 l/100 km) on the <strong></strong>highway, remains unchanged for 2012 as well.</p>
<p><strong>BMW</strong></p>
<p>BMW has been leading the marketing charge in the U.S. for diesels (witness the company’s brilliant “Changes” Super Bowl commercial).  <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/DSC_0252.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2835" title="DSC_0252" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/DSC_0252-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a>Unfortunately, with the launch of the new F30 3er Series planned for next spring, production of the 335d, the car that The Diesel Driver’s readers picked as the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2011/04/bmw-335d-2011-diesel-car-of-the-year/">2011 Diesel Car of the Year</a>, is ending and BMW of North America is not offering a diesel 3er with the launch of the next generation 3er.</p>
<p>This leaves the <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/2010/02/new-bmw-x5-xdrive35d-unveiled/">X5 xDrive35d</a>, which gets 19 mpg (12.38 l/100 km) in town and 26 mpg (9.0 l/100 km) on the highway, as the automaker’s sole diesel offering in the U.S. for 2012 and it continues largely unchanged going into the 2012 model year.</p>

<p>The vehicle we’ll be getting is one that we’ve reported on in the past year and it is a currently available model.  We’ll reveal the car after we take delivery but first, we invite you to guess what manufacturer it will be from.</p>
<p>(Note to the reader: The actual car under the tarp is not the vehicle in question.)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Bill Howard is well-known to many car enthusiasts as the editor of TechnoRide and a columnist for the BMW Car Club of American&#8217;s <em>Roundel</em> magazine.  <a href="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/DSC_0232-C.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2280" title="DSC_0232-C" src="http://www.thedieseldriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/DSC_0232-C-255x300.jpg" alt="" width="255" height="300" /></a> In the July issue of the <em>Roundel</em>, he wrote about The Diesel Driver&#8217;s presentation of the 2011 Diesel Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show from a rather unique vantage point.</p>
<blockquote><p>Club member Jonathan Spira, who won BMW CCA&#8217;s membership contest several years running, started The Diesel Driver when he saw an opening: too many McPriusMoonie.com sites and not many diesel sites.  TDD does a diesel-car-of-the-year award, and the 2011 winner was the BMW 335d, so Spira brought a camera crew to the NYIAS to tape the award presentation.</p>
<p>I watched with a mixture of horror and, oh, fascination &#8211; okay, schadenfreude &#8211; when he got a couple of sentences into the presentation, and at the next booth over, the Mercedes-Benz introduction ended with a heavily amplified rendition of Janis Joplin&#8217;s &#8220;Lord, Won&#8217;t You Buy Me A Mercedes Benz.&#8221; Conspiracy theorists, arise.  Perhaps M-B set the timing to mess up Spira&#8217;s taping, since a Benz didn&#8217;t win?</p></blockquote>
