The new infotainment system is easy to use, although we left it on Apple CarPlay mode most of the time we had the vehicle.  The panoramic sunroof and shade gave the cabin a light and airy feel, and we appreciated the clean design of the instrument cluster.


In the course of the K5’s stay with us, we took it to destinations as wide-ranging as Jones Beach and the Sycamore Drive-In Restaurant in Bethel, Connecticut, a hangout for 1950s and 1960s classic cars and their owners, where the K5 got a thorough once over and thumbs up from many of the patrons.

Once underway, we found that the 1.6-liter turbocharged four-banger that was well paired to an eight-speed trannie and 18” alloy wheels  to develop 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.  The front-biased all-wheel drive system kept things steady in wet weather including a rather frightening squall we encountered.

Kia offers excellent support for Apple CarPlay in the K5, although it doesn’t make good use of the extra space that the 10.25” central information display would afford.   The touchscreen worked well and was perfectly positioned for the driver to use.  Android Auto is supported as well.

The Korean automaker is quite strong in driver-assistance tech.  The K5 comes with forward-collision alert and avoidance assist, which uses assisted braking to avoid an accident; a driver-attention warning à la Mercedes-Benz’ coffee-cup alert; lane-keeping assist; blind-spot monitoring; and radar-based cruise control, which did a great job of keeping pace with traffic and adjusting as required without driver intervention.
