Winter Storm Threatens 45 Million People on East Coast

Although the start of astronomical winter is over a week away Mother Nature has plans to make it look a lot Christmas in the coming days: A powerful Nor’easter is threatening bring significant snow fall to the East Coast starting Wednesday.

Over 45 million people are under a winter storm watch as of Tuesday morning and that is expected to turn into a winter storm warning by Wednesday.

New York City could see as much as one foot (30 centimeters) of the white stuff before it ends Thursday, while other parts of the tri-state area could get as much as 16” (41 cm).   Wind gusts as strong as 40 mph (64 km/h) could accompany the storm into New England.

Those staying at home could see power outages in some areas, while travel will be greatly impacted throughout the region.

“Confidence is high that this winter storm will result in significant impacts, including travel disruptions and power outages across much of the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England,“ the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center said in a statement.

Travelers should expect a significant number of flight delays and cancellations as well as hazardous road conditions.

The storm will bring moderate snowfall to the Central Plains before heading east.
