The BMW Welt, BMW’s €500 million ($540 million) brand experience and delivery center, reopened Friday after closing on March 17, following a directive issued by the Bavarian government for all tourist attractions to close.

Now the most popular tourist attraction in Munich, the BMW Welt opened its doors on October 17, 2007 with 800 guests in attendance, followed by a Tag der Öffenen Tür – or Open House – on October 20.  It opened for new-car deliveries on October 23, 2007.  The first customer to take delivery of a new vehicle was Frequent Business Traveler editorial director Jonathan B. Spira, who had purchased a 2008 BMW 550i.

A typical day includes 100 deliveries and staff can deliver as many as 160 cars in busy periods.

“In recent weeks, large parts of public life have practically come to a standstill,” said Helmut Käs, the director of the BMW Welt. “We are very pleased that places are carefully being reopened and that we too can reopen to our visitors.”

In addition to serving as a delivery center, the BMW Welt offers restaurants, shops, exhibitions of current and vintage BMW products and technologies, as well as special events which include jazz concerts. The cloud-like 73,000-square-meter (785,000-square-foot) glass-and-steel structure was designed by Austrian architect Prof. Wolf D. Prix, the protégé of Prof. Karl Schwanzer, designer of the iconic BMW “Four Cylinder” skyscraper adjacent to the facility. The BMW Museum, which is separate from the BMW Welt, is across the street.

To celebrate the reopening as well as loosening of coronavirus pandemic-related restrictions, the BMW Welt’s Doppelkegel will feature a red pulsing heartbeat in lieu of its normal lighting through May 24.

“With the light installation, we want to send a sign of hope,” said Käs.

The BMW Welt will be open from 8 a.m. local time to 8 p.m. going forward.  All restaurants and cafes in the BMW Welt will reopen on May 25.
