BMW Recalls Thousands of Older Models for Defective Airbags
BMW announced the recall of 116,000 models manufactured between 1999 and 2001.
The move comes after a new and distinct problem was uncovered in air bags made by Takata, which in 2017 filed for bankruptcy after being at the center of the world’s largest auto safety recall. Like the earlier problem, however, the new issue will cause airbags to explode and hurl shrapnel, which could result in the death of injury of drivers and passengers.
The new airbag problem has resulted in at least one death and one injury.
The recall covers certain BMW 3er Series models sedans manufactured between March 1998 and July 2000, 3er Series coupes manufactured from February 1999 to June 2000, and 3er Series wagons manufactured between September 1999 and May 2000.
BMW said that approximately 8,000 definitely have faulty inflators and should remain parked, while the rest can still be drive. Owners are being notified.
