A Tesla electric vehicle operating on autopilot exploded after crashing into a tow truck stopped to assist another vehicle on a highway near Moscow.

The driver, Alexey Tretyakov, was behind the wheel of his Model 3 EV on the Moscow Ring Road or Московская кольцевая автомобильная дорога, Moskovskaya Koltsevaya Avtomobilnaya Doroga, when it hit the tow truck.

The driver and two passengers – the driver’s children – were injured and transported to hospital for treatment.  Tretyzkov reportedly suffered a broken leg while the children escaped with bruises.

Law enforcement sources confirmed that the vehicle was on autopilot to a reporter at a local television network, Zvezda.
