Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn was arrested in Japan after an internal investigation revealed “significant acts of misconduct” over many years by him and another top executive, Greg Kelly.

“These two gentlemen were arrested this evening, that is what I understand,” said Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa at a press conference in Tokyo.

The Japanese automaker said that its investigation found that Ghosn and Kelly had been under-reporting Ghosn’s compensation as well as other malfeasance.

“Numerous other significant acts of misconduct have been uncovered, such as personal use of company assets,” it said in a statement.

Nissan plans to remove Ghosn from his position as chairman and director, Saikawa said, and also plans to remove Kelly from his position as a board member.
