Daimler: Diesel Trucks Are Here to Stay
Diesel will continue to power trucks in the United States for years to come, according to a recent speech given by an executive at Daimler Trucks North America.
Speaking at the Green Truck Summit earlier in the month, Kary Schaefer, the company’s general manager of marketing, said diesel is the most efficient and most cost-effective fuel available and will be for some time.
Schaefer indicated that advancements in other areas such as active safety systems and connectivity will help reduce the environmental impact of trucks and improve safety at the same time.
“Green means much more than tailpipe emissions,” Schaefer said.
Acknowledging that both natural gas and battery-electric will have a place in some truck fleet operations, Schafer also pointed out that both technologies come with inherent limitations that must be studied before making a commitment. She also said that Daimler is developing electric trucks – the automaker already manufactures electric cars – and that this technology will eventually make its way to North America.
