Shell to Roll Out EV Charging Network Across Europe
Royal Dutch Shell said Monday it is working with leading automakers to deploy ultra-fast chargers on European highways.
The move will propel Shell ahead of its rivals and provide a solid backbone of charging stations across the continent. Shell said it is working with Ionity, a joint venture between BMW, Daimler, Ford, and Volkswagen.
The program is kicking off with 20 charging stations in Austria, Germany, and Norway with 50 planned by the start of 2018. All told, the partnership will include 18 countries in Europe.
To accomplish this, Shell is partnering with Autobahn Tank & Rast in Germany; OMV in Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovania; and Circle K in Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden; among others.
The chargers themselves will be capable of 350-kW charging speeds, making the charging stations somewhat future proof as current vehicles aren’t capable of charging at those rates yet. The charging rate is three times faster than that of Tesla’s Supercharger network.
