Beginning April 1, New York State will offer a rebate of up to $2,000 to buyers of electric vehicles.

The rebate will be available to those who purchase a battery-only electric vehicle, a plug-in electric hybrid, or a fuel-cell electric vehicle. This will include vehicles such as the BMW i3 and i8, the Chevrolet Bolt, and all Tesla vehicles.

The initiative was approved last year by the State Legislature and will make such vehicles more price competitive with gasoline-powered cars.

New York was among the 25% of states that did not offer incentives for buying an electric vehicle.

To prepare for the April 1 rollout, officials at the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority are reaching out to car dealerships to raise awareness of the program.
