2017 Ford Fusion Titanium Hybrid – First Look and Review

DSC_0759 (1)It’s been almost a decade since Ford owned Aston Martin but there it is, the Aston Martin-like grille… on a Ford Fusion.

Now in its second generation, the Ford Fusion Hybrid, first introduced in 2009 for the 2010 model year (the more conventional gasoline-powered Fusion was launched in 2006), was completely redesigned for 2013. To the best of my knowledge, the 2013 Fusion lineup was the first production sedan to be offered in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and traditional gasoline four-cylinder versions.

Now the entire Fusion line is the beneficiary of a mid-life refresh from Ford’s designers and there are some important changes including new headlights (the base S and SE models get halogens while the Titanium and Platinum levels get LED headlights). All models have restyled LED taillights.

Inside, Ford’s designers have apparently become smitten with the rotary-dial shifter concept, which can be found on vehicles ranging from Jaguars to Chryslers. Now that shifters are electronic, they can be designed to take up less room than a traditional lever, making room for more storage compartments (there’s a slot perfect for a large smartphone now) and more cup holders.


The rotary shifter looks high end and has a satisfying feel to it as I ran it through the gears. Unlike the Chrysler implementation, which is too close to the rotary knob that controls the climate control’s fan, placement is excellent although I still prefer the pushbuttons found in the Fusion’s higher-end Lincoln sibling, the MKZ.

The Fusion graduates to the newest version of Ford’s infotainment system, Sync 3, which replaces MyFord Touch. Sync 3 has a greatly improved user interface, works either by voice command or touch, and is capable of receiving software updates via Wi-Fi. The 8” touchscreen that comes with the Technology package is more than enough real estate to accomplish any task.
