Road Test and Review: 2016 Honda Accord Sedan

DSC_0637 (1)The Honda Accord may be the oldest nameplate we’ve tested at Frequent Business Traveler, aside from its stablemate, the Honda Civic. Honda first introduced the Accord in its home market in 1976, the name chosen because of the Japanese automaker’s “desire for accord and harmony between people, society and the automobile.”

The Accord, the first vehicle from a Japanese car company to be manufactured in the United States, had been the best selling Japanese import for some 15 years starting in 1982, and has earned an unparalleled reputation for reliability. We even have one in the family and I sincerely believe the reputation to be true.

The current Accord is in its ninth generation, and was introduced as a concept car at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2012. The sedan went on sale in the United States in September of that year; the coupe followed one month later. Never a company to rest on its laurels, the ninth generation has been given a mid-cycle refresh for 2016.

The exterior is the recipient of relatively minor tweaks (“why mess with success” must have been the prevailing attitude) and the real update is a plethora of technology, that is to say improvements of the digital kind.

Still, there’s a sportier front end, new headlights, a slimmer grille, and integrated LED fog lights in the lower fascia. In the rear, new LED taillights are about it.

Inside, the Accord gets support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, becoming the first Honda with that functionality. A second screen has been added to the center stack, to be used for images from the rearview or Lane Watch cameras, as well as for navigation, trip-computer info, phone, messages, and audio.
