BMW and Nissan Announce EV Charging Station Networks in 19 States

BMW and Nissan announced plans to jointly launch a network of dual-port fast chargers across the nation to support Nissan Leaf and BMW i3 owners in 19 states.

The two automakers have installed 120 dual-port 50kW DC Fast-charging stations and hope to promote the adoption of electric vehicles with the promise of easier public access to charging stations. The charging stations are being managed by Greenlots, a company that specializes in EV charging networks.

Locations include California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, North and South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Each location will have a dual 50 kW DC fast-charging station with Chademo and CCS (Combo) connectors. The stations are capable of charging a vehicle up to 80% in approximately 20 to 30 minutes, significantly faster than the amount of time it takes to charge using a Level 2 (240 V) charger.

The two automakers are looking to support long-distance travel with electric vehicles, something that has been an elusive goal in much of the United States due to a lack of public charging stations.

“Together with Nissan, we are focused on facilitating longer distance travel so that even more drivers will choose to experience the convenience of e-mobility for themselves,” said Cliff Fietzek, BMW’s manager of connected emobility.
