DSC_0345Volkswagen announced plans to offer a $1,000 goodwill package to U.S. customers who purchased diesel vehicles impacted by the recent emissions scandal as a “first step” in repairing relations with consumers.

The package, announced Monday, will include a $500 prepaid credit card and a $500 credit card that can be used at participating Volkswagen dealers. It also includes three years of 24-hour roadside assistance.

The package is “a first step towards regaining our customers’ trust,” said Michael Horn, who heads up VW’s U.S. unit, in a statement.

The Wolfsburg-based automaker has yet to announce what course of action it will undertake to bring its diesel vehicles into compliance.

“We are working tirelessly to develop an approved remedy for affected vehicles,” said Horn.
