Audi Opens E-diesel Plant in Dresden, Germany

IMGP2837Audi announced the opening of a pilot plant in Dresden, Germany that produces diesel fuel from water, CO2, and green electricity. The plant will be operated in conjunction with Climeworks and sunfire to industrialize e-fuels.

The sunfire plant requires carbon dioxide, water, and electricity as raw materials to operate. The carbon dioxide is extracted from the air using an air capturing process, while another unit uses splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, which then reacts with the carbon dioxide in two chemical processes. This produces an energetic liquid that is made up of hydrocarbon compounds, called Blue Crude.

Currently, the plant can produce approximately 160 liters of Blue Crude per day. Nearly 80% of the Blue Crude produced can then be converted in synthetic diesel fuel, called Audi e-diesel.

Audi also produces Audi e gas at a plant in Werlte, Germany, which can be use in the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron. Audi offers a green electricity solution for drivers of the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron as well.

The Audi A3 Sportback g-tron is capable of 71 to 73 miles per gallon (3.3 to 3.2 1/100 km) and the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron is capable of 138 to 156 miles per gallon (1.7 to 1.5 1/100 km).
