2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec – 6 Month Review and Report

DSC_0747The arrival of our 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec 4Matic was heralded by not one, not two, but over a dozen major snowstorms and blizzards. As we noted before in these pages, it wasn’t the most optimal time to begin life with a long-term test car but those were the cards we were dealt.

The Benz followed our long-term Chevrolet Cruze Diesel into service by roughly one week and it took a while for us to really get to know it.

The E250 BlueTec is new for 2014, introduced in conjunction with a refresh of the E-Class family. Indeed, the facelift was rather extensive and the car bears only a passing resemblance to our outgoing E350 BlueTec sedan.

Given the heated competition in the mid-size luxury sedan market and the freshly-scrubbed competitors from Audi and BMW in the market, along with the new look of Mercedes’ CLA and S-Class lines, our friends in Sindelfingen could not afford to let the E-Class look old.

The new look sets the E-Class apart from the crowd, especially the sport version with its prominent grille and integrated star (no hood ornament on this model, that’s reserved for the luxury variant). At delivery, we marveled at how much of the car is really new, practically everything one can see including headlamps, taillights, front and rear bumpers, front fenders, the hood, and the rear doors.

THE ENGINE

Our new E250 BlueTec has a new engine, too. It’s the second Mercedes to use the all-new 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel – the first four-cylinder diesel engine that the automaker has offered in the U.S. in almost 30 years. (The first to get the new engine was the 2013 GLK250 BlueTec 4Matic, which was offered for sale last year.)
