Volkswagen of America will introduce the Passat BlueMotion Concept at the Detroit Auto Show next week.

The mid-size sedan is not a hybrid, diesel, or electric vehicle, and is fueled by gasoline.  Despite this, the BlueMotion Concept incorporates new technology to make it very efficient, and it achieves 42 mpg (5.6 l/100 km) on the highway.

The Passat packs a new version of Volkswagen’s direct injection, turbocharged 1.4-liter EA211 TSI engine, which develops 150 horsepower and produces 184 pound-feet of torque.  The engine incorporates Active Cylinder Management technology, which will systematically deactivate certain cylinders in order to conserve fuel.

In addition, the Passat implements a coasting function that activates when the driver eases up on the accelerator and includes start/stop technology as well.
