Spied: 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe
MUNICH— After the debut of the new BMW 4 Series at the 2013 IAA (International Automobile Show) in Frankfurt, BMW is continuing the expansion of the 4er range with the development of its second four-door coupe, the 4 Series Gran Coupe.
Within the 4 Series lineup, there are currently two model types, namely the BMW 4 Series Coupe and the BMW 4 Series Convertible. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is conceptually based on the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, which went on sale in North America in the summer of 2012.
The Diesel Driver spotted a prototype of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, which is expected to join the 4 Series Coupe and Convertible in summer 2014, on a Munich street. The test car was camouflaged around the headlights and the sides and also highly camouflaged at the rear, to keep it as secret as possible. Nonetheless, the test vehicle offered a first glimpse of the dynamic design that features a longer and stretched rear window.
Currently, European customers can choose between three petrol and three diesel engines when ordering a 4 Series coupe or convertible. Diesel buyers can opt for the BMW 420d, powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine and the 430d and the 435d, the latter two with a turbocharged six-cylinder diesel powerplant.
The BMW 430d develops 258 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque while the 435d produces 313 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. The 420d’s four-banger is capable of 184 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.
It is very likely that the 4 Series Gran Coupe will be available with similar engine options in Europe, while U.S. customers will get to select between the BMW 428i Gran Coupe and the BMW 435i Gran Coupe.
Although no details have been published about its debut, it is rumored that the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe will appear at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014.
