The 2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe

BMW unveiled a new line of coupes, the 4 Series.  The 4 Series, which replaces the current 3 Series coupe, will be offered as a 428i and 435i  in the United States.  In Europe, the 4er will be introduced as a four-cylinder diesel, the 420d, and two petrol models, the 428i and 435i with four- and six-cylinder engines.

The 4 Series coupe is the successor to the original 3 Series coupe, introduced in 1975.  A four-door 3 Series was introduced in the line’s second generation in 1984 and BMW will continue to offer a 3 Series as both a four-door sedan and wagon.  BMW changed the model number to align its nomenclature with the larger 6 Series and 8 Series coupes.  BMW premiered the Concept 4 Series Coupé at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, which gave the world the first glimpse of the new 4er.

The 4 Series is noticeably larger in both width and wheelbase than the 3 Series coupe it replaces and it sits far lower to the ground.  It maintains a close family resemblance with the new BMW 3 Series, which was introduced in late 2011.  Similar to its predecesors, the 4 Series has a 50-50 weight balance and in Sport, Luxury, and M-Sport lines in addition to the standard edition.

The 4 Series, similar to the new 3er, comes standard with BMW’s iDrive cockpit controller and central information display.  The navigation system has sharper graphics and works in conjunction with a full-color head-up display.  Driver assistance features include Driving Assistant Plus, which warns the driver when it detects a pedestrian in the vehicle’s path, LED High Beam Assistant, which provides glare-free illumination of the road ahead, and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go.  The vehicle’s Bluetooth office functionality supports dictation with full speech recognition

The 428i will come equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasolne engine; the 435i comes with a 3.0-liter inline six.  Both have a choice of a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed sport automatic as well as a choice of all-wheel or rear-wheel drive.

The 428i will have a base price of $41,425; the 435i starts at $46,925.  Both will be available this summer.
