BMW Launches All-New 2014 X5 and X5 Diesel

BMW unveiled the upcoming completely redesigned third-generation 2014 X5 Sports Activity Vehicle, which will be available in both diesel and gasoline variants.  The X5 made its debut in 1999 and the second generation X5 was launched in 2006.

Codenamed F15, the Spartanburg, South Carolina-built X5 will be larger, lighter, more powerful, more efficient and offer more technology than its predecessor, competing in an increasingly crowded and competitive luxury full-size SUV segment.  Additionally, the new X5 will be the first BMW offered with the option of seating for seven passengers.

The 2014 X5 will be launched in 2013 with six- and eight-cylinder turbocharged gas engines as the X5 xDrive35i and X5 xDrive50i models along with a rear-wheel drive X5 sDrive35i model, the first time BMW is offering the X5 without all-wheel drive.  In early 2014, BMW will begin to offer the X5 xDrive35d with an all-new 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine.

BMW says the new X5 diesel will offer “significant improvements” in fuel efficiency over its predecessor while continuing to provide “abundant torque.”

The X5 xDrive50i will offer more horsepower and torque while at the same time providing improved fuel economy.  All new X5 models will be equipped with BMW’s eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 2014 X5 will come standard with iDrive4.2, which features a new cockpit controller with a built-in touchpad that allows the driver to input information for destinations, phone numbers, and other functions as well as an all-new navigation system with a 10.2” central display.  BMW ConnectedDrive now offers a dictation feature for sending text messages and e-mails

Other new features include Active Cruise Control with Traffic Jam Assistant, which maintains keeps the vehicle in the center of the lane in addition to a following distance, LED Headlights, and a 1,200 watt Bang and Olufsen sound system. BMW will offer the new X5 will several optional interior and exterior packages, the X-Line, Luxury, and M-Sport lines, as well as two interior packages, Ivory White and Mocha.

The 2014 X5 will begin production in July, and will be in BMW showrooms by the fourth quarter of 2013.
