Volkswagen Chosen as 2013 Diesel Car Manufacturer of the Year

Volkswagen is the 2013 Diesel Car Manufacturer of the Year, according to the readers of The Diesel Driver magazine.DSC_0507  This is the second year in a row that Volkswagen has captured the title.

Wolfsburg-based Volkswagen received 51.1% of the 6,147 votes cast by readers of The Diesel Driver.

The votes came from over 100 countries. Sixty-seven percent of the votes were cast by readers in the United States, 7% were from Canada, 5% came from Russia and 3% originated in Germany.

“Volkswagen has done an extraordinary job of positioning its diesel-powered automobiles in the U.S., with the result that 21.6% of customers opted for diesel over gasoline in the past year,”said Jonathan. Spira, editor of The Diesel Driver, in presenting the award to Rainer Michel, Volkswagen of America’s vice president of product marketing and strategy, at the New York International Auto Show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center

“It’s great news that the readers of The Diesel Driver magazine have once again voted Volkswagen as Diesel Car Manufacturer of the Year,” said Rainer Michel, vice president of product marketing and strategy, Volkswagen of America. “This award is further validation of Volkswagen’s global leading position in offering the most innovative diesel technology, and continued belief that diesel cars provide an alternative environmentally-friendly choice to hybrids. They also reflect our continued commitment to bring American consumers an unrivalled range of diesel vehicles, from the Jetta to the Touareg.” ,

“The diesel market has, in the past few years, become a true alternative to the hybrid market for those buyers seeking truly fuel efficient and economical vehicles,” said David M Goldes, group publisher at Accura Media Group, which publishes The Diesel Driver.  “As the market leader, Volkswagen has done a tremendous job in raising awareness and educating buyers and sales figures bear out the success of its efforts.”

In second place was Audi with 30.6% of the vote.  BMW, with 8.4% of the vote, came in third.

Each year, The Diesel Driver’s readers select the Diesel Car of the Year and simultaneously choose the Diesel Car Manufacturer of the Year.  For the 2013 balloting, jurors (magazine readers) voted from a slate of five manufacturers, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volkswagen.
