The BMW 730d BluePerformance and BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition were named the most sustainable vehicles in the their respective classes by the independent Ökotrend ranking prepared by leading scientists and researchers in Germany.  Ökotrend’s study analyzed the fuel economy and CO2 data of car manufacturers as well as economic and social commitment.  BMW was ranked first in two categories, second in one, and third in another.

Ökotrend  named the BMW 730d the winner of the luxury car segment, beating out its rivals, the Audi A8 3.0 TDI and the Mercedes S250 CDI. The diesel 7er is equipped with a six-cylinder diesel engine and develops 400 pound-feet of torque and  258 hp with a fuel economy rating of  5.6 l/100 km (42 mpg). The CO2 emissions are 148 g/km in the EU test cycle. With the optional Blue Performance technology, the BMW 730d is already in compliance with the upcoming EU6 emissions standard by using a diesel particulate filter and oxidation catalyst with NOx absorber which reduces nitrogen oxide emissions.

In the Compact SUV segment, Ökotrend  ranked the BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition number one for sustainability.  Thanks to its numerous EfficientDynamics technologies, including energy saving tires, active ventilation flaps, and a redesigned 2.0-liter diesel engine, the X1 uses only 4.5 l/100 km (52 mpg) and with CO2 emissions of 119 g/km in the EU test cycle. The reworked diesel engine is nonetheless able to provide sporty driving characteristics with its power output of 163 hp (230 kW) and 280 pound-feet (380 Nm) of torque.

The two other BMW EfficientDynamics models that were highly ranked by Ökotrend were the BMW 320d EDE and the BMW 116d EDE.
