2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

DETROIT—Following its launch of the all-new CLA-Class on the eve of the 2013 North American International Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz debuted an all-new E-Class. The E-Class, which includes sedan, wagon, cabriolet, and coupe variants, received a mid-life design refresh in design, The sixth generation of the E-Class will also see improvements in fuel efficiency and safety options, and the performance-oriented sports version of the E-Class, the E63 AMG, will be offered for the first time with the Mercedes-Benz 4Matic all-wheel drive system..

Mercedes is introducing a new model, the E250 BlueTec for 2014, which replaces the E350 BlueTec.  The E250 BlueTec comes with a 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel engine, which produces 190 horsepower (140 kw) and 369 pound-feet (500 Nm) of torque.

Buyers in most markets (but not in the United States) will have a choice of six diesel and six petrol engines plus a highly efficient E300 BlueTec Hybrid with a 27 horsepower (20 kW) electric motor. The E300 BlueTec Hybrid has a combined power output of 231 horsepower (170 kW) and offers a fuel economy of 57 mpg (4.1 l/100 km).  The overall available power output of the engines ranges from 136 horsepower (100 kW) in the E200 CDI up to 408 horsepower (300 kW) in the E500. This is topped by the E63 AMG version with its maximum power output of 557 horsepower (430 kW) with 590 pound-feet (800 Nm) of torque.

Since its launch in 1976, Mercedes has sold 13 million cars, despite strong competition in its market from the BMW 5 Series and the Audi A6.

Apparently, the E-Class was showing its age so Mercedes sent it to a spa for a facelift. The quad headlight design is carried over but better integrated, thanks to a nip and tuck.  Mercedes buyers have a choice of ordering the car with the classic Benz look with the stand-up star hood ornament atop the grill or with a sportier grill with the star in its center.

The car’s interior was also seen visiting the spa and has a neater, cleaner, more organized appearance.  The seats have been redesigned and are available in new colors.

Finally, Mercedes is introducing new, never before seen driver assistance and safety features under the Intelligent Drive banner.  The system’s Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera, located near the rearview mirror, creates a 360º view of what is in front of the car as well as oncoming and crossing traffic.  Collision Prevention Assist, a radar collision warning system, is standard, as is Attention Assist, reworked and rebranded as Attention Assist 2.0 and now adjustable by the driver. Mercedes enhanced and updated other driver assistance options including Active Lane Keeping Assist and Adaptive High beam Assist Plus.
