Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new GLK250 BlueTec 4Matic sport utility vehicle that will be available in the U.S. at the beginning of next year. The new SUV will be the German automaker’s sixth diesel for American buyers and comes at the time of a redesign of the GLK-Class.  It is the auto maker’s entry-level SUV (Mercedes offers three other diesel SUVs, the  ML-Class, GL-Class, and R-Class).

The GLK250 BlueTec will be powered by a 2.1-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 190 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque.  Fuel economy figures have not yet been announced but the current GLK250 BlueTec that is sold in European markets is rated at 36.1 mpg (6.5 l/100 km) in the combined (i.e. city and highway) EU driving cycle.  It comes standard with Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel drive system.

In addition to the GLK250 BlueTec, Mercedes will also make a more powerful gasoline version, the GLK350, which has a 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline powerplant.  The GLK350 is available with or without 4Matic.

This is the first time Mercedes will offer the smaller diesel engine in the U.S. and it signals the likelihood of seeing other cars becoming available with the four-banger given the high cost of federalizing an engine and the need to amortize these costs across as many car sales as possible.

From the outside, the restyled GLK bears more than a passing familial resemblance to other recently redesigned Mercedes’ SUVs.   Inside, it will be equipped with a new infotainment system that will include the updated Comand cockpit control system, as well as other new equipment such as a color instrument cluster display and new trim.  In all, Mercedes says that the new GLK has 1,000 new parts compared to the outgoing model.

Also new is the Eco stop/start feature, which kills the engine when the car is stopped (at a traffic light, for example) and restarts it automatically when the driver removes his foot from the brake.

The GLK is manufactured in Bremen, Germany and may be ordered for European Delivery.
