Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTec Test Drive and Report: The Road to Kennebunkport
THE DRIVE ALONG US-1
For the last stretch of our drive, we decided to continue along US Route 1.
The history of the US 1 dates back to 1911, when it was named the Atlantic Highway. With a total length of 2,377 miles (3,825 km),,US 1 is a major north-south connection. Starting at the Canadian border near Fort Kent, it parallels I 95 much of the time. It ends in Key West, Florida. Along the way, we stopped to enjoy the sunset at a wonderful, old lighthouse, built in 1879, near Cape Neddick, on the Atlantic Ocean.
The last 24 miles (38 km) took us along the Atlantic Ocean where we passed through Ogunquit and Wells before we reached the Hidden Pond Resort Hotel in Kennebunkport. The Hidden Pond Resort truly lives up to its name. In the dark (which is when we arrived), it was qu
ite a challenge to find the main entrance and the car’s navigation system thought it was a bit further down the road than it actually was.
After a total distance of 295 miles (474 km) with an average cruising speed of 55.9 mph (90 km/h), our fuel economy was 37.93 mpg (6.2 l/100 km)! This figure beats the former benchmark from our drive to Maastricht with a decrease of 1.2 l/100 km or an increase of more than 6 mpg.
Our next report in this series will cover the drive from Kennebunkport towards Bretton Woods, where the E350 BlueTec climbed Mt. Washington.
