Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4: World’s First Production Diesel Hybrid
PAGE 2 – THE ENGINE
The new crossover comes with a 2.0-liter 163-hp (120 kW) diesel engine with an electric motor that provides 37 hp (27 kW). It delivers 221 pound-feet (300 Nm) of torque in the front and 148 pound-feet (200 Nm) in the rear. This is equivalent to the output of a 2.2-liter twin turbo engine, according to Peugeot.
The drivetrain that powers the front axle uses an electronically-controlled transmission that can be shifted in manual or automatic mode. A start-stop system shuts the engine off where appropriate (such as at a traffic light) and immediately restarts it when the accelerator is depressed. The car’s starter is actually an 8 kilowatt high-voltage integrated starter-generator that manages the start-stop system and also can charge the nickel-metal hydride battery. The electric motor in the rear uses regenerative braking to charge the battery as well.
If the battery has a sufficiently high charge, the 3008 can be powered by the rear-axle electric motor alone and, at high speeds, both drivetrains can work together to provide all-wheel drive.
Most importantly, the 3008 HYbrid4 used only 3.8 l/100 km (62 mpg) of diesel fuel and emits 99g/km of CO2.
The 3008 HYbrid4 operates in four modes:
- As a zero-emissions vehicle (ZEV) running in all-electric mode
- In four-wheel drive mode
- In Sport mode
- In Auto mode
The name 3008 has significant meaning, according to Peugeot. The 3 indicates that the car is from the company’s compact medium range, while the double zero designates “a new and original car, an extension of the ‘classic’ Peugeot range.” The 8 at the end indicates the generation within the current range.
The interior is both comfortable and versatile. A panoramic glass roof (1.60 m2) creates an airy and bright cabin. The car’s cargo capacity maxes out at 1604 liters (1,241 dm3 using the VDA standard). Available advanced driver assistance features include a Head Up Display, Distance Alert (warns the driver if he ventures too close to the car in front), hill assist, an automatic electric parking brake, and three-dimensional satnav.
Peugeot isn’t stopping with the first diesel hybrid and the first TtR vehicle. It’s already planning a plug-in version of the car with lithium-ion batteries.
