Simple solution: BRING MORE DIESELS!

I own a 2002 VW Golf TDI and a 2005 VW Jetta Wagen TDI. I love getting 45-50 MPG while driving my cars like I stole them. I've already logged more than 400k miles between the two of them. Not having a hybrid battery system to worry about and having a 700+ mile tank range (~ 15 gallons) between fillups comes as a bonus.

My cars already meet and EXCEED the 35 MPG mandate. I love the rich blend of Economy, Longevity, Performance, TORQUE, and Efficiency that a modern turbodiesel car provides. I love not having to downsize the car or downsize the performance to get the fuel economy. I drive a lot, around 1000 miles/week, so all of these things are important to me.

Overall, my diesel car ownership experience has worked out so well that I seriously will NOT own another gasoline car ever again if I can help it, gasser hybrids included. No more gassers! All future vehicle purchases of mine shall be DIESEL vehicles.

Europe is privy to lots of nice turbodiesel cars that we in the USA are unable to get. Funny how these cars are on my "most wanted" list!
