Being a long distance commuter, I travel 95km in each direction to go to work. I want a diesel vehicle.. desperately. Unfortunately, I won't spend $40,000 on a BMW and see it get hit with 60,000km a year. I want something small and cheap (not the Smart..) like a Mazda3, Ford Focus, Hyundai accent, Suzuki SX4.. etc..

I don't understand why America's automakers are not bringing diesel's to our market. A few years back that was alot what was being written about. I recall articles of Ford coming out with diesel, navigators. Stories of honda accord diesel in the U.K. that got 50 mpg. What gives is there legislation on the horizon...to squash the diesel, economy movement.

Great piece, Jonathan! Notwithstanding growing up as a kid around a 5.7 diesel-powered Buick Electra Estate wagon that did an excellent job at turning D-2 into noise and a large smokescreen, I have since then been the very satisfied owner of VW TDIs, Jeep CRDs, and most recently the 335d. While hybrids are solid intra-city mileage monsters, if one spends any measurable time on the highway, one of the new common-rail diesels should be given serious consideration if comfort, performance and economy are of interest.

Excellent job on the Diesel Driver web site, BTW!
