How can we, the US diesel-driving public, get BMWNA to approve the sale of the 530d (with a manual transmission) here in the states? Who is able to organize us to approach the product planners with one LOUD voice? The 530d is ideally suited to my needs (power, sport, sophistication, luxury, efficiency, and dynamics). I would plunk down a significan downpayment if only I could specify the car of my dreams, an Orient Blue over Oyster-and-Black leather 530d Touring with a manual transmission. All my needs and over 30 miles-per-gallon! AWESOME!
Please, someone, organize us and help me get my dream vehicle!

Thanks Jonathan! I’ll be in the market in the next 12 to 18 months and am very much leaning towards my first diesel and excited about it! I read your writeup on the Audi A3 TDI and think that is a cool little car but may be too much of a slug in the acceleration department for me…won’t know unless I test drive one.

I did test drive a 335d and was pleasantly surprised at the low end torque…Something about Audi (interiors maybe) that has me wishing for an equivalent offering from them. A 530d stateside would be another interesting option…

I can’t imagine why diesel wouldn’t gain more traction here in the US…newer generation drivers don’t remember the blue smoke and dirty engines of the 70s and 80s, it’s just a matter of time until diesel gains meaningful market share here…

Joe, any indication as to whether BMW plans to bring over the 530d to the US? If so, any idea when?

Also, will Audi be bringing over additional diesel vehicles besides the A3?

We need many more diesel choices in the US…I know we first need demand for diesel in the US, but to some extent this is a chicken and egg situation….with the demand probably needing to come a little before more offerings as far as the manufacturers are concerned.

Antonio, I would not be surprised if we see four-cylinder turbo-charged diesels at some point – with a manual transmission. The timeline for this, however, is unknown.

I am a diesel lover. I was happy when BMW brought the 335d, but it was a little more money I was willing to pay and no manual tranny available. Anyone knows if BMW NA will bring smaller diesel engines with manual transmissions?

Jonathan, are you saying the 530d will come with a manual shift transmission as the standard transmission? That is indeed good news.
