This winter I obtained a used set of 17x8 BMW OEM wheels for my 335d Sport and mounted the recommended size winter tires, 225x45-17. While this combo drives great in snow the 225x45 tire size aggravates the already bad speedometer error -- almost a 7% error at and indicated 80mph, i.e. I'm only doing a true 75mph. When the rear winter tires wear out I'm moving up to a pair of 245x45-17 in the rear to make the speedometer closer to an accurate reading (and the 245's will better handle the available torque!).

I never understood what a difference winter tires make. UK law doesnt require any change of tires for the different seasons, so everyone just uses summer tires all year round and then everyone wonders why they skid all over the place when there is 1mm of snow. Having driven on snow tires in 50cm of snow and ice in eastern europe, I can now attest to the difference having proper tires for the conditions makes!
